The rise of outdoor training, and what it means for caravan parks

Ten years ago, training mostly meant a gym membership. Now it's just as likely to mean a bootcamp at the beach, a run club in the park or a calisthenics session on an outdoor rig. Training outside has become normal, and guests notice when it's missing.

Outdoor gyms are everywhere now

Councils across Australia have been installing outdoor gyms in public parks for more than a decade. Back in 2016, outdoor gyms were already a "well regarded asset" in more than 300 communities around the country (Outdoor Design). Today, people are used to finding a pull-up bar and a few stations along the foreshore. Many expect the same where they stay.

Why people prefer training outside

  • Fresh air and space. No queues, no crowded gym floor.

  • Free and flexible. Train whenever suits, for as long as suits.

  • Functional training. Bodyweight and rig-based workouts that build real strength.

  • It's social. Small groups, families and friends can train together.

What this means for your park

An outdoor gym is a natural fit for caravan parks, tourist parks and retreats. Guests are already outside, often up early and looking for something to do. A well-placed rig near open lawn, the beachfront or your glamping area becomes part of their daily routine.

Getting it right

  • Placement. Visible, easy to reach and away from quiet sites.

  • The right equipment. A rig that covers squats, pull-ups, dips and suspension training does most of the work.

  • Shade and lighting. For early starts in summer and evening sessions.

  • Clear signage. Simple exercise guides help guests who aren't sure where to start.

  • Weather. Equipment built for Queensland conditions.

Rig or container gym?

An open-air rig suits parks with space and good weather. A container gym adds shelter and lockable sections, so equipment can be secured when it's not in use and access can be limited to guests. Many parks will want both.
