Lighting control for pubs and clubs: setting the mood from lunch to late night

Lighting does more to change how a venue feels than almost anything else. The same room can feel like a family bistro at lunch, a relaxed dining room at dinner and a buzzing bar at 10pm, just by changing the light. The problem is that most venues still do it by hand.

The problem with switches and dimmers

  • Every staff member sets the lights differently

  • Rooms end up too bright at night or too dark at lunch

  • Lights get left on after close

  • Nobody remembers which switch controls which circuit

How lighting control works

A lighting control system groups your lights into zones and saves the right level for each one as a scene. Staff choose "lunch", "dinner" or "late night" from a keypad or touchscreen, and every light in the area goes to the right level at once.

  • Scenes set once, then recalled at the press of a button

  • Zones so the bar, bistro, gaming room and beer garden can be changed separately

  • Schedules that change scenes and switch lights off automatically at set times

  • Simple controls on a wall keypad, touchscreen or app

  • Linked to AV, so music and screens change with the lights

Outdoor and beer garden lighting

Beer gardens and terraces earn more when people stay after dark. Festoon lighting, feature lighting on trees and walls, and good lighting on paths and steps make outdoor areas feel welcoming and safe. On a control system, they come on and off with the rest of the venue.

Lighting control at The Alcott

At The Alcott in Lane Cove, Solvie delivered lighting control as part of the venue's full technology package, alongside audio visual, security and number plate recognition. Each space can change its mood in one touch, without staff needing to know which circuit does what.

Can it be added to an existing venue?

Often, yes. Depending on your wiring and fittings, lighting control can usually be added during a refurbishment, or room by room. A site walk shows what's possible.
